I did a lot of shopping for planers before deciding on the STEELEX 15" planer. I went to the Grizzly Industrial show room in Bellingham Washington to make some comparisons. The Grizzly 15" has the on/off switch on the side and I feel it could be damaged while moving around the shop. Their white colored model (Polar Bear) addresses the problem with the switch in a metal shroud which will take up valuable shop space. It also had too many Grizzly badges and heavier table extensions. The Steelex 1002 is nice looking and so far performs excellent especially for the low price compared to other Chinese built planers. I like the motor mounted on top along with the on/off buttons. The OFF button is nice and large. Looking at the underside of the headstock of the steelex 15" and the Grizzly 15" planer they look almost identical.
When I received my Steelex planer the boxes said Shopfox.biz and Woodstock both Grizzly brands and the technical support number is in the Grizzly building in Bellingham WA. It seems most planers on the market are made by or for the same companies and are branded differently. As a 40+ year Cabinetmaker the planer is an important piece of shop equipment. This planer will replace a Makita 12" planer/jointer I've had for 26 years. It planes quite nicely and doesn't snipe the boards, just a nice smooth cut and the noise is actually less than the old 110 volt Makita planer. I used 2" x 4"'s between the bed and headstock like the instructions suggested but used my fork lift since there weren't 4 people available to lift it onto the stand. Don't kill yourself by lifting it by yourself. It came dry of gear oil so I used a large drink straw to fill it up. The instructions suggested to shim the table extensions with masking tape but I noticed they added set screws for adjustment which made it easy. The built in mobile base makes it easy to move it around the shop, just as easy as a shopping cart. The manual has a two year warranty from defects by Woodstock International Inc. I know I'm going to enjoy making shavings with this planer.
