Coast LED Lenser HP8437 Focusing LED Flashlight X21 Review

I use my X21 to keep track of my 3 dogs as they wander around the forest surrounding our home during the winter months. (We live in Washington State, so winter lasts for a while here.) The big advantage of the X21 for this use is that it can cover a very large area with excellent illumination over the entire area. At 1000 lumens, it beats anything out there. I can easily illuminate an area covered by a distance of 100 feet and a circumference of 40 feet with the X21. The illumination from the X21 is truly "daylight at midnight".
The really big deal of the X21 (and, indeed, all LED Lenser flashlights) is that the illumination is so very evenly distributed across the entire range of focus - no dark rings or variation in illumination within the illuminated area. Also, battery life is excellent - I only change batteries once a year, and I really use this flashlight a lot during winter months. The shoulder strap provided with the X21 is also excellent - it allows me to easily carry the X21 as I follow by dogs through the forest.
My only gripe with my X21 is that the focus ring does not slide smoothly - it requires some "wiggling" to get it to move. However, this may just be a problem with my particular unit, and LED Lenser may have addressed this problem in the 3 years since I bought my X21. I only wish that the slide focus on my X21 worked as well as the slide focus on my LED Lenser P14. If I could give a 4.5 star rating, I would do so based on this problem with my particular unit, but given the other advantages of the X21 over any other flashlight, I decided to move to a 5 star rating versus a 4 star rating.
Bottom line - if you need to illuminate a large area with a portable flashlight, you simply can't go wrong with the LED Lenser X21.
