Product Description

The BK Precision Model 4040A Sweep/Function Generator is a versatile signal source which combines several functions into one unit - waveform generation, pulse generation (through variable symmetry), and frequency sweep. Additionally, the instrument provides the added convenience of a built-in frequency counter. This permits more accurate determination of output frequency than is possible with a simple calibrated dial. Coarse and fine tuning controls permit precision stability of the output frequency. The internal frequency counter can also be used to measure external frequencies. The five-digit frequency counter displays the generator output frequency or external signals from 5 to 30 MHz.

B&K Precision 4040A Sweep Function Generator, 0.2 Hz to 20 MHz Frequency Range Review

My understanding is that BK Precision, a US-based company, does have manufacturing facilities in the US. However, the 4003A I received appears to have been "Made in Taiwan". I was disappointed to discover that I wasn't supporting my fellow US workers, although I had hoped I would be.

As usual in my experience with non-US manufactured goods (sigh!!!), there had to be something broken! In the case of my 4003A, it was the blue rubber gasket around the front panel. It arrived torn, almost falling off of the tan plastic case! While a 1/2" piece of duct tape seems to be holding it...what the heck kind of manufacturing is this, where a thing needs duct tape repairs literally before it's out of the bubble wrap??

There are not separate Course and Fine frequency adjustment knobs, so you'll have to quickly learn a pretty light touch on the single small .725" knob (analog).

As you get higher into the 100KHz and 1MHz ranges, the square wave begins to look more like a sine wave, and similar distortion affects the other non-sine waves. I doubt this will be a major problem, at least for my hobby-level projects. But if you need clean square waves at these higher frequency ranges, _without_ some kind of buffer, the 4003A might not suffice for you.

The red LED indicating that the frequency counter value has changed flashes for even the slightest change. This sounds like a benefit, but in practice it's a little annoying, as even the internal frequency is always changing ever so slightly. I would have preferred this indicator be less sensitive, or stop after n-seconds, or maybe even operate only when coupled to an external signal (or best of all, a combination of all of these). Granted, this rather annoying design element doesn't affect the core function of the device.

I have used other function generators with more waveforms, and an overall larger number of features, in a much smaller package. However, the 4003A at 10.5"Wide X 4.5"High X 12.5"Deep isn't anything to complain about. I'm not going to reduce my rating based on its size. There are also comparable function generators that are larger.

Although it has that typically 'cheap' plastic feeling to it, it is relatively lightweight (easily picked up with one hand), and it seems sturdy enough. So no real complaints here.

I've only had the device for a very short time, but so far the frequency adjustment knob, small and course though it may be, is pretty smooth. I have no complaints on any of the controls so far.

I have not had my oscilloscope calibrated in a very long time, so I cannot yet comment on the accuracy of the 4003A's frequency counter as shipped.

A professional would surely want to invest more for their main function generator. But for the hobbyist or the student, the 4003A will do just fine. Many more features can be gotten with some additional investment, but with its support for external frequency counter input and sweep function, the 4003A is by no means the bottom of the barrel.
