Ridgid 66992 F-50 5-inch Forged F-Series Vise Review

In order to save a little money, I bought this vise from another merchant. Big mistake. I don't like the vise and they have a 15% restocking fee plus I pay return shipping. The vise has some good features: the jaws open to 8 or 8.5"; it seems strong; it has a lifetime warranty against breakage; the jaws are actually 5.5" wide; and it has a gib adjustment so that you can take out any slop in the moving jaw. BTW, both the vise body and the movable jaw are not forged as single pieces. Instead, they are welded together from multiple forgings. Now for the bad features: No sliding surfaces appear to be machined. In fact, the only machined surfaces appear to be the anvil and the jaws. Neither the main or pipe jaws are replaceable. The double lead Acme screw moves the jaws about 0.4" per turn vs. a more typical 0.2" found on most vises in this size range. This reduces the clamping force by half. (I wonder if this is the reason it has a lifetime warranty.) Also, the handle is much more difficult to turn than what I'm used to. You're sure not going to spin the handle with one finger. But the absolute worst feature is the swivel mechanism. Since the swivel surfaces are not machined, the swiveling action is very rough and sloppy. Even worse, the vise tends to jam during rotation because of the very poor clamp down design. My old cast iron Chinese vise (which I broke) has a much, much nicer swivel design. If you have any experiene with even halfway descent vises, you will NOT be happy with this vise.
