Miller 257217 Digital Elite Inferno Welding Helmet Review

I've used this helmet exclusively for TIG welding, and it's worked flawlessly. I find that it blocks the light that comes in under the helmet much better than others that I've used. The head gear to a little work to get right, but it's very comfortable once it fits properly. The buttons are easy to press while wearing TIG gloves, and I suspect they'd be fine with MIG gloves as well. Once you know which button does what, you can adjust it without taking off the helmet. But I find that you can't read anything on the display or the buttons while wearing the helmet, so you do have to take it off if you want to check what your current settings are (that's not a problem, just an observation).

The one thing I've noticed is that, if you're watching someone else weld from a distance of even a few feet, it's likely that the helmet won't darken. To solve this, when I'm observing others, I just crank up the sensitivity so that even the lights in the room darken the lens, and then it works just like a fixed shade helmet.

Realistically, if I were to do it again, I'd probably save a few bucks and get one level down in the Miller line (Digital Performance). It doesn't have the X-Mode, but I haven't had much luck with that mode. I thought it may solve the problem I mentioned above about observing others, but it doesn't seem to help the situation. The Digital Performance also has one fewer arc sensors and a slightly smaller lens, but those factors don't matter too much for my purposes. If you go down to the Digital Pro Hobby helmet, you also lose to cut mode, which is pretty handy if you ever do plasma cutting.
