Product Description
Enjoy the comforting warmth of floor heating in your home! This is an energy efficient luxury that everyone can afford. Installed under your floor or countertop, the electric heat radiates upwards to provide soothing warmth and comfort. The heating mat is assembled from rugged reliable heating wire on flexible fiberglass mesh. Wire spacing is 3" to assure uniform heat distribution to your floor. Two layers of Tefzel (Teflon) provide tough resistance to temperature and handling. The wire is fully supported by the mesh and the mesh is stapled or tacked to your subfloor, not bonded with an adhesive backing. This assures both the wire and mesh remain firmly attached to your subfloor and do not float up in the mortar during installation. Advanced design brings all power connections to one convenient location. Install under tile, stone, vinyl, or wood floors and countertops. Simply cover the mat with mortar, and then install flooring on top. Adds only 1/8 inch height to floor installation. Warmstone mats are the highest quality and are certified to UL and Canadian CSA standards to satisfy requirements of the National Electric Code and your electrician. No maintenance necessary. BONUS: Customers can use our online system to enter a floor plan and Warmstone will send you a detailed installation diagram. Warmstone mats fully cover and uniformly heat the square footage as advertised. This kit includes a Honeywell programmable thermostat (model TH115-AF-GA) to complete your heating system. Designed specifically for floor heating, it includes a floor sensor with 10 foot lead, and 120 V integrated GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupt) as required per National Electric Code. Features include a large backlit display, preprogrammed quick setup, and personalized schedule 7 day 4 time periods per day with two temperature settings. This is the best available combination of floor heating mat and thermostat, bringing you the best in quality, value, and uncompromised safety.20 Sq Ft Radiant Floor Heating Kit with Honeywell Thermostat (built-in GFCI) and Floor Sensor Review
I lit this system off for the first time a few days ago and it is pretty nice. You have to wait 28 days after the install to light it off, due to masonry curing time. The kit came equipped with a super nice honeywell thermostat that can be programmed out the wazoo. I am still toying with all the different functions but so far it is working as well as you would imagine. The build quality was robust and I'm betting it will have good longevity. Whenever it does die I will turn the wire drop into a heated towel rack or a spare outlet. I had a couple of questions for the seller about the installation and their answers were prompt and informative. Great people to work with.As far as the mat design, there are easier to install designs out there (at least their marketing hype says so) but this design is adequate especially if you plan to do the floor in two rounds (let the first layer of mud dry over the wire then come back and install your tile the normal way). I did this totally DIY with little experience prior to but I did read tons of info on the web before finally pulling the trigger. If you have ever successfully laid tile, you can do this. Just read up real well on everything and don't skimp on the masonry products. They will be thermally stressed pretty hard for years to come when this system lights off on cold mornings. Laticrete Platinum 254 and Urethane grout with Laticrete Hydroban between the wire and the tile is the way I went!
I would say the heat system almost doubled the work/difficulty of the job. If you have very level floors you could use self leveling compound, but that was not an option in my 1920s rambler. I went with the flat plane method, 1/4" above the wire nominally using screed guides set to level (flat) with the natural plane of the room. As best I can tell, that was the "right" way to do it. I uploaded some pictures here of my technique. It was well within the ability of a determined DIYer. This project was a labor of love with labor being the key word.
All in all I am happy with the purchase and the results, the woman definitely likes the system. I would caution against hiring an average Joe to do a heat system like this because doing it right takes a lot of time/work. Most average Joe tile contractors have no idea how to do it right and won't take the time to learn. The ones who do know how to do it will probably have their own favorite brand they will want to install anyways (for about 5x the price of this). I know this from personal (painful) experience. This why it ultimately became DIY in my case.
If you are going to do tile in the bathroom anyways, live in a cooler climate, and aren't afraid to learn something new, I'd say going with this kit for floor heat is the way to do it. The big box stores have kits that are like twice the price when you add in their digital thermostat, plus tax. It was very easy to liberate the wire from the mat to go around a few places I didn't want to be cold. Hot glue gun did the trick to stick the wire in place as well as the mat. I used a multimeter as recommended and followed the directions to ensure proper resistance of the heating wire, although if I had to do it again I would probably just get a WATTS RADIANT 423250HW LoudMouth Monitor, 9 Volt.
